1) Direct Reported Speech
O “Ali bir doktor,” dedi. He said “Ali is a doctor.”

2) Indirect Reported Speech
O Ali’nin bir doktor olduğunu söyledi. He said that Ali was a doctor.

The verb Demek (= to say, commonly used as “… dedi / diyor”) is used for direct reported speech in Turkish. The verb Söylemek (= to say) is used for indirect reported speech in Turkish.
