Big Three: Top Turkish Football Clubs

Big Threes (Uc Buyukler), top Turkish football clubs in Turkey.

The Big Three, Üç Büyüklerin Turkish, is the nickname of the top three most successful football and sports clubs based in Istanbul: Beşiktaş JK, Fenerbahçe SK and Galatasaray SK.

Besiktas JK

Besiktas Sports Club Beşiktaş JK founded in 1903.

BJK is the first sports club in Turkey. Beşiktaş teams wear black and white shirts and are knicknamed “Black Eagles”. Their stadium is 32,000-seater İnönü Stadium on the Bosphorus sea front near Dolmabahçe Palace. Beşiktaş football team is one of the top three teams and has won twelve Turkish Super League title. They also participated in the UEFA Champions League four times.

Fenerbahce SK

Fenerbahce Sports Club (Fenerbahce SK), one of the top 3 most popular sports clubs in Turkey founded in Kadikoy in 1907 by a group of local men during the last years of the Ottoman Empire. The lighthouse on the Fenerbahce cape was a big influence on the club’s first crest and the colors of the team was yellow and white inspired by the daffodils around the lighthouse.

In the early years of the team, team members took part in the Turkish Independance War. The football team was also very succesful in the matches that they played against the French and English army teams in the invasion of Istanbul after the Great War.

Fenerbahçe teams wear yellow and dark blue shirts today and they are knicknamed “Yellow Canaries”. Their stadium is 50,000-seater Sükrü Saracoglu which was renovated recently. Fenerbahçe, one of the leading sports clubs in Turkey, espcially football, won 17 Turkish Super League title and played quarter final two times in 1962, semi final in 2013 in European UEFA Cup winners and Champions League (2008). The team also has basketball, voleyball, atletism, boxing, rowing, fencing, swimming, table tenis, mountaineering, cricket, shooting branches.

Derby games between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are one of the most important football games in the world.

Genc Fenerbahçeliler (Young Fenerbahçe fans) is one of the most popular fan groups of the team.

Galatasaray SK

Galatasaray Sports Club, Galatasaray SK (Spor Kulübü), founded by the students at Galatasaray High School in 1905. Galatasaray teams wear yellow and red shirts and they are knicknamed “lions”. Their stadium is Ali Sami Yen Stadium in Mecidiyeköy on the European side. The team also has basketball, voleyball, swimming, rowing, sailing, water polo, athleticism, bridge, judo, formula, riding branches in addition to football.

Galatasaray football team won 17 Turkish Super League title. The football team is the most succesful Turkish team in European cups. They played against Aresenal in the final game of UEFA Cup 2000 and they won the game and became UEFA Cup champion. In the same year they also beat Real Madrid and won the UEFA Super Cup. They also joined Champions League 9 times.

Ultraaslan is one of the the most popular fan groups of the team.

Derby games between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are known as one of the most important football games in the world.
