Istanbul city guide: Maiden’s Tower, Kiz Kulesi, one of the best places to see on the Asian side of Istanbul.
One of the symbols of Istanbul, the Maiden’s Tower or Leander’s Tower or Kız Kulesi in Turkish, was used as a military building and a lighthouse for centuries has been turned into a popular café and restaurant with a spectacular view of the city. You can get to Kız Kulesi from Salacak by private boats several times a day.
Salacak is a neighbourhood located between Üsküdar and Harem on the Asian side facing Kız Kulesi (Maiden’s Tower) and historical peninsula. Salacak has one of the best Istanbul panoramas both during the day and night. It is hard to believe but there was a beach in Salacak until the 50’s before the road along the sea was built.
Beside spending time at the Maiden’s Tower, you can sit one of the cafes along Salacak with your camera and take photos of old Istanbul with Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque and the sun going down over the minarets and Istanbul silhouette.
How to get to Salacak
You can take a ferry from Eminonu or boat from Besiktas to Uskudar and walk about 20-25 minutes to the right side (to the south of the Bosphorus) along the coast to get to the Maiden’s Tower.
