Places to visit in Istanbul. Dolmabahce Palace Museum.
Dolmabahce Palace Museum is an impressive European-style palace built by Karabet Balyan, one of the members of the Imperial architect family, the Balyans, is one of the best places to visit in Istanbul beside the Topkapi Palace Museum, Hagia Sophia Museum and many other palaces and museum in Istanbul.
The palace mainly consists of three parts, named as the Imperial Mabeyn (State Apartments), Muayede Salonu (Ceremonial Hall) and the Imperial Harem. The Imperial Mabeyn was allocated for administrative affairs of the state, Imperial Harem was allocated for private lives of the Sultan and his family and the Muayede Salon, placed between these two sections, was allocated for exchanging of bayram greetings of sultan with dignitary statesmen and for some important state ceremonies.
Dolmabahce Palace has 3 floors, 285 rooms and 43 halls. The walls and ceilings of the palace are decorated with tones of golden enamels and paintings of the European artists of the age. The famous Hereke silk and wool carpets used in the palace are considered as the best works of Turkish art. The glittering crystal chandeliers, candlesticks and fireplaces exhibit their beauties in many rooms of the palace. The huge crystal chandelier of the hall ordered and brought from England weighs 4.5 tones and is hung to the 36 m high dome.
Dolmabahce Palace hosted 6 sultans and the last Ottoman Caliph Abdulmecid Efendi from 1856 when it was put into service, until the abolition of the caliphate in 1924 after the foundation of the Republic of Turkey. The palace was used as Presidency office between 1927-1949. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, used Dolmabahce Palace for his studies in Istanbul between 1927-1938 and died in the Dolmabahce Palace.
